LSC-CyFair Artistic Director of Vocal Activities Alex Qian believes music has a truth, beauty, love and language that, no matter what the differences among people worldwide, connects them. As founder of the music department in 2003 and the current Department Chair of Music, Drama and Dance, Alex has seen this program grow to include major musical /opera productions, such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables , Evita and Marriage of Figaro And he proudly watches his students improve skills and gain confidence as they progress daily toward success in their university auditions, pursuit of advanced degrees and various careers including teaching.

“Education, especially music education, can change people’s lives deeply. From the first day I meet my students until I conduct them in a major choral piece, it is a really rewarding experience, especially the moment when I join their celebration with the audience and their family after the show.”

Adding to personal invites to be a festival guest singer, conductor and workshop presenter in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Europe, China and the United States, Alex joined the Houston Festival Chorale this summer in Austria for five concerts and an “Orchestra Live” school project in which they received the comment “In the spirit of artistic excellence and intellectual engagement, you have contributed an important element to the global network of culture, peace and mutual respect between the world’s people….”

Alex Qian was named the Best Music Director and Conductor by Kennedy Center College Festival in 2013 for his successful musical production “Les Miserables”.  More recently, Alex and the Houston Festival Chorale/LSC-CyFair Concert Choir received a prestigious invitation to appear in a significant SATB classical choral work and special China Songs at Carnegie Hall in 2016.
